If you do not know the exact information or figures to support an argument when you are writing an essay, you may use the following:

Generally speaking…
On the whole…
In a majority/a large number of cases…
It appears/seems that…
It is often said that…
There is a tendency for…
It has been suggested/claimed that…
It is generally believed/agreed/recognized/assumed that…
It is widely believed/accepted/assumed that…
